About Maryland Bears

Black bears, once nearly extinct in Maryland, have made a remarkable comeback, thanks to a half century of environmental programs to protect bears and their habitat and a halt to trophy hunting. The small population is now estimated at 266 to 437 bears in the state, with most of them living in the western counties of Garrett and Allegany, which is where the state’s previous three hunts have occurred.

But Maryland's bears are still not safe. In this section, you can read about the natural history and status of the black bear population, the legislative history regarding Maryland's black bears, and much more.
